How we rate risk. High means security updates stop or the last paid extension year ends, and affected systems need a plan. Moderate means a supported path exists but needs scheduling. Low means security updates continue or the runway is long. Calendar files include reminders 12, 6 and 3 months ahead. Starred products are saved in this browser only.

What end of life means for your servers and hardware

Software end-of-support dates often decide when hardware has to change. A physical server running Windows Server 2016 may be too old to run a newer version well, and a host that cannot run vSphere 8 cannot take the next release either. Match each date above to the machines underneath it before you plan.

Timing matters more than usual this year. Memory supply is tight, and Micron has said it expects the shortage to continue through 2028, so replacement servers and PCs can take longer to arrive and cost more than an older quote suggests. If a server has to be replaced before a deadline, get the quote and a delivery date early, and leave time to test the migration. If you would rather not make one large purchase while prices are moving, a fixed monthly fee is another route; see Corsica's Hardware as a Service.

Windows Server 2016: what Microsoft has confirmed

  • Security updates end on January 12, 2027.
  • Paid Extended Security Updates are available through Azure Arc for up to three years, through 2030. Billing begins January 13, 2027.
  • Buying them requires Software Assurance through volume licensing, unless the servers are licensed through SPLA or a server subscription.
  • Extended Security Updates cover Critical and Important security fixes only. They do not add features or non-security fixes.

Hardware dates for a specific server or switch model are published by each manufacturer and vary by model, so they are not listed here. Firewalls are covered in the next section. Send us your device list and we will map each one to its vendor dates.

Firewall end-of-life dates by manufacturer

A firewall sits at the edge of your network, so one that no longer gets security patches is a bigger risk than most other end-of-life items. Dates are set per model and per software release. The table above lists the 2027 firewall dates we have confirmed; filter it by the Firewalls category. For any other model, use the manufacturer's own page below.

Cisco Meraki

Support typically ends five years after end of sale. 2027 dates in the calendar: MX100, MX64 and vMX100.

Your options when a product reaches end of support

Most organizations end up using a mix of these, server by server.

Upgrade in place or migrate

Move the workload to a supported version. This is the cleanest outcome, but the application vendor has to support the newer operating system or database, so check compatibility first.

Replace the hardware and the software together

The right call when the server is old, out of warranty or too slow to carry a newer release. Order early, because lead times and pricing can move.

Move the workload to Azure or a hosted platform

Suits workloads that do not need to stay on site. It trades hardware spend for ongoing cost and needs migration design.

Bridge with paid security updates

Buys time to plan without leaving the server unpatched. It costs money and does not fix the underlying age of the system, so treat it as a bridge.

Replace hardware on a fixed monthly fee

Corsica's Hardware as a Service provides servers, firewalls and other network equipment, and end-user devices with 24/7 monitoring, preventative maintenance and replacement of end-of-life devices, all for one fixed monthly fee. It suits teams that prefer operating expense to a large purchase before a deadline, and it can be combined with any option above.

Why auditors care about end of support

Unsupported technology is easy to spot in a review, and many frameworks expect you to track it and have a plan.

  • PCI DSS requirement 12.3.4 asks organizations to review hardware and software technologies at least every 12 months, including vendor end-of-life announcements, and to document a management-approved plan to remediate outdated technology.
  • CMMC practice 3.14.1, flaw remediation, requires you to identify, report and correct system flaws in a timely manner. Assessors use it against end-of-life assets, because a component that no longer gets vendor patches cannot be fixed, which leads to a non-compliance finding.
  • CMMC practice 3.4.1, baseline configuration, requires baseline configurations and inventories of your systems. Unsupported hardware or software that you cannot manage securely undermines that baseline.
  • CMMC practice 3.8.3, media sanitization, requires you to sanitize or destroy media that holds Controlled Unclassified Information before it is disposed of or reused. That applies when end-of-life hardware is finally retired.

This summary is general information, not legal or audit advice. Confirm the requirements that apply to your organization with your auditor.

Frequently asked questions

When does Windows Server 2016 reach end of support?

Microsoft will release its last security update for Windows Server 2016 on January 12, 2027. The servers keep running after that date, but they stop receiving security updates unless they are enrolled in paid Extended Security Updates.

Can I still get security updates for Windows Server 2016 after January 12, 2027?

Yes, for a fee. Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates for Windows Server 2016 through Azure Arc for up to three years, through 2030. Enrollment opened in the Azure portal on August 3, 2026, and billing begins January 13, 2027. Buying them requires Software Assurance through volume licensing, unless the servers are licensed through SPLA or a server subscription. They cover Critical and Important security updates only, not new features or non-security fixes.

What is the difference between mainstream support and extended support?

During mainstream support, Microsoft provides security and non-security updates. In extended support, security updates continue at no cost, while non-security updates and support become paid, and Microsoft no longer accepts design change or new feature requests. After end of support there are no new security updates, no non-security updates and no assisted support.

What happens to Windows 10 PCs in 2027?

Organizations that enroll Windows 10 PCs in paid Extended Security Updates receive security updates until October 12, 2027 for Year 2, and until October 10, 2028 for Year 3, which is the maximum. The program is sold by year, so buying Year 2 means also buying Year 1. Commercial Enterprise, Education and Pro editions qualify, and the PC must run Windows 10 version 22H2.

Is there a paid extension for SQL Server 2017?

We have not found a Microsoft-announced Extended Security Updates program for SQL Server 2017, whose end of support is October 12, 2027. Microsoft does offer Extended Security Updates through Azure Arc for SQL Server 2014 and 2016. Confirm SQL Server 2017 options with your Microsoft licensing contact before you plan around one.

What happens to vSphere 8 after October 11, 2027?

Broadcom lists October 11, 2027 as the end of general support for vSphere 8.0. Confirm which support options apply to your license with Broadcom or your VMware partner, and plan a move to a release that is still supported.

When do my firewalls reach end of life?

It depends on the manufacturer and the model, and each manufacturer publishes its own dates. In 2027, for example, the Cisco Meraki MX100 reaches end of support on February 1, the Meraki MX64 on July 26, and Cisco ASA software releases 9.18 and 9.19 on November 30. The firewall section of this page links to the lifecycle page for Cisco Meraki, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, Cisco ASA, Check Point, SonicWall, WatchGuard, Sophos and Juniper. Firewalls are commonly replaced after five to seven years, so any device that old is worth checking now.

What happens if I keep using a firewall after end of support?

The firewall keeps passing traffic, but the manufacturer stops providing security patches and usually stops technical support and hardware replacement. A firewall sits at the edge of your network, so a flaw that never gets patched is exposed to the internet. Plan the replacement before the date, and treat internet-facing firewalls as the first priority.

How do I build an end-of-life inventory?

List every server, hypervisor host, database, firewall, switch and operating system version you run, with the hardware underneath each one. Match each item to its vendor end-of-support date, then rank the list by exposure: internet-facing systems, domain controllers and anything that holds sensitive data come first. Corsica Technologies can build this inventory with you.

Can I pay for replacement hardware monthly instead of buying it?

Yes, through a Hardware as a Service model. Corsica Technologies' Hardware as a Service provides managed servers, firewalls and other network equipment, laptops and desktops for one fixed monthly fee that includes 24/7 monitoring, preventative maintenance and replacement of end-of-life devices. Contact Corsica to see whether it fits your environment and which devices it would cover.

How early should I start replacing hardware before a deadline?

As early as you can. Hardware lead times have been long, and Micron has said memory supply will stay tight through 2028, so a quote can change before an order ships. Getting a quote and a delivery date now leaves time to test the migration before the end-of-support date.
